History of Generative Music: The Ancients

on April 9, 2026, 6:00pm to 8:00pm

Event actions

Event description

Long before computers or artificial intelligence, people were creating systems that made music on their own - from wind chimes that played melodies shaped by the breeze to water-driven instruments in ancient gardens. These early innovations laid the groundwork for ideas that composers and technologists still use today.

In this session, you'll explore the surprising origins of generative music in the ancient world, discover the physical and intellectual mechanisms behind these early inventions, and learn how these centuries-old concepts connect directly to modern music production and AI.

Drop-in, no registration required.

This program is part of the Innovator in Residence (AI and Music Production) program, which is designed to help beginner and intermediate learners build knowledge and creative skills and get hands-on with current AI tools in music production and learn about the history, copyright and ethics of generative music.
