TPL presents historian Christopher Zeichmann in conversation with Nahlah Ayed at the Toronto Reference Library's Jack Rabinovitch Reading Room.
In his groundbreaking book Radical Antiquity: Free Love Zoroastrians, Farming Pirates, and Ancient Uprisings, historian and religious studies scholar Christopher Zeichmann takes us on an uncommon ground-level tour through the ancient Greco-Roman world. Instead of viewing this period through the lens of elites, Zeichmann recovers the stories of escaped slaves, self-governing pirates, radical religious sects, and reclusive communities who rejected the state entirely. From Spartacus and the uprisings of the enslaved to "free love" Zoroastrians who practiced radical gender equality, these communities sought an egalitarian way of life that avoided the coercion, hierarchy, and exploitation that characterized the empires around them.
Join Toronto Metropolitan University professor Christopher Zeichmann and CBC IDeas host Nahlah Ayed for a revelatory conversation that radically expands our understanding of the ancient world and what it means to live freely.
Q&A and book signing to follow. Books available for purchase.
